Youth volunteer training

With youth unemployment at a high level, our Youth Volunteer Training Course provides young people with a high-quality, accredited programme of training and work experience, all delivered using informal education and practical experiences.

The course can either be run as an 8 week programme with weekly workshops, or an intensive 3 day course. The subjects covered include: What is youth work? Why have youth workers? Who are young people? Health and safety, equal opportunities, discrimination, session planning, young people’s development, the purpose and value of volunteering, teamwork and communication skills.

″The course was really good!! It helped me learn the skills I needed to volunteer at my youth club and through this I got paid work with them too″

– Jasmine, 17

Through the volunteering element of the programme, students undertake 30 hours of real-life work experience as a youth worker in supervised placements. This allows them to gain the skills, confidence and determination to succeed in a competitive job market. They also fully plan, deliver and evaluate their own residential experience, helping them to understand the issues surrounding managing budgets and programmes.

The outcome

A major success of the course has been the commitment of the young people to finish the whole programme, and we are very proud of a 90% completion rate.

Many of the students carry on this learning with a view to complete further training and even pursue a career in a caring profession. What’s more, 30% continue with their volunteer placements, which directly benefits the local community. Having real work experience with an accreditation and the ability to show development of key skills, has helped many of our young people gain employment after finishing the course.
